Day Seven

Today is a bittersweet day as the secondee group splits to start our individual adventures. The remote crew head north, while the Cairns-based secondees go south.

Even though I’m based in Cairns, I’m joining Vit in Car One as he takes secondees to each remote community. Vit ensures secondees arrive safely and are introduced to their key stakeholders so they can get started immediately, while I’m there to research my project with the Cape York Land Council.

A couple of hours after leaving Normanby Station, Car One got a flat tyre. The funny thing is; it was only that morning that Vit had demonstrated what we would need to do if we got a flat tyre. On the very same tyre! Not sure why, but Vit didn’t think this was funny at all. It could have been because he was under the car changing the tyre while I was walking around taking photos of him and a random emu. Good on ya, Bear Grylls/Dad!

Onwards and upwards – we made it to the Archer River by late afternoon, rated #1 campsite for awesomeness in all of Cape York*.

We had a swim, unpacked the swags then headed to the Archer River Roadhouse. They had completely sold out of organic salads so we had to have our second lot of roadhouse burgers for the day. Don’t judge us!

When we got back to the campfire, Bear Grylls/Dad lit a campfire using implements that only MacGyver could make a fire out of, and we watched endless shooting stars in the big old open sky.

* As rated by Vit.
